The first ever Moto2 action in Brazil saw Tony Arbolino excel in the tricky, changeable weather conditions, chipping away at his own best as the rain came and went to finish Friday Pracice on top.
The REDS Fantic Racing rider was out on track with a clear visor to aid vision and was fast throughout the session, finishing with another late improvement to take the lap record at the new track to 1: 23.709s.
The Italian was pressured by championship leader, Thai race winner Manuel Gonzalez, the fellow Kalex rider was just 0.170s slower for Liqui Moly Dynavolt Intact GP.
David Alonso lapped heavily to make up for his earlier lack of track time. The move paid off as he moved from an already improved sixth to be third at the chequered flag.
The clean slate of a new track suited rookie Angel Piqueras who stormed to fourth for QJ Motor.
Mario Aji built on a strong showing in the morning to move into fifth for Idemitsu Honda Team Asia, just over half a second off the leading lap.
Celestino Vietti started the session for much and took a while to get in gear, he the sliced chunks off his time to ride up the timesheets for the SpeedRS team. The top Boscoscuro rider was sixth after a late mechanical prevented any progess in the closing minutes.
Daniel Munoz was only just slower in seventh for Italtrans. The close session saw Blu Cru Pramac Yamaha rider Izan Guevara claim eighth, while Collin Veijer and Alonso Lpea also made the top 10.
Alex Escrig lead in the morning, and although he could not match that for the Forward rider still showed enough to claim a direct Q2 slot. The Spaniard will be joined by Deniz Oncu for Elf Marc VDS, QJ Motor rider Ivan Ortola and American Racing’s Filip Salac.
The talented field in Moto2 meant many former race winners will need a trip through Q1, including rookie Alberto Ferrandez, who was the rider to just miss out, and Senna Agius, who was already enduring a tough weekend following the passing of a crew member at the team.
Former race winners and title contenders Sergio Garcia (17th), Aron Canet (18th) Joe Roberts (20th) and Daniel Holgado (21st) will all also feature in the battle to progress.
Crashes slowed progress for Zonta van den Goorbergh (19th), Barry Baltus (22nd)and Jorge Navarro (25th).

The first session for the Moto2 class saw clear skies finally arrive after the earlier hour delay for track conditions, which had a knock-on effect through all classes, as Escrig matched his pre-season form - leading the way with a 1:30.102s new best at the Goiania track.
FP1 was a close affair with Guevara keeping his consistent run going with a solid second - just 0.069s slower.
There was a full mix of manufacturers at the top of the timesheets with Aji slotting his Kalex into third behind the Forward and Boscoscuro bikes, leading the way himself earlier in the session.
The top five was completed by Baltus and Vietti.
Gonzalez seemed uncomfortable in the wet, never looking likely to trouble the session leaders he tiptoed to 21st.
Alonso was even further adrift after limited track time after his bike ground to a halt as he exited the pits for the extended session. Sat in the pits while his rivals learned the track, a late return saw the Colombian move from last to 26th in the final fifteen minutes.
Luca Lunetta is replaced at the second round for SpeedRS to recover from injury, leading to a return to the paddock for Dennis Foggia, who finished the day 28th.
