Moto2 qualifying in Jerez for the Spanish round of the championship saw a determined Collin Veijer claim pole position, after being denied an earlier effort by yellow flags.
The Red Bull KTM Ajo rider had already shown he had the pace when setting red sectors - but was fast as Daniel Munoz fell, cancelling that effort.
With clear track and now more determined, the Kalex rider went again and this time his solo lap, a 1m 39.101s effort took pole, his first in Moto2 and the first intermediate pole for a Netherlands rider since Wilco Zeelenberg in 1991.
Alex Escrig, who topped the Jerez test before the season with an unofficial 1m 38s lap, was back to being able to show that level of pace for Forward Racing, also solo the Spaniard was just 0.057s slower on home soil.
Manuel Gonzalez had won from pole in Jerez last season, but the close nature of the dry sessions had seen him pushing hard to move to Q2 in tenth on Friday.
The championship leader was characteristically off the pace in the wet in FP2, placing 22nd but found his groove in Q2, finishing third for a front row start, the Liqui Moly Intact GP rider was just 0.095s off the lead time himself in another close session.
There had been a mix of riders showcasing their skill at the much ridden Jerez track, with Barry Baltus lowering the lap record in FP1 before Austin winner Senna Agius dropped it further in the timed session, taking the Liqui Moly Dynavolt Intact GP rider directly to Q2 with the best time.
The Australian couldn’t match that position in Q2, but was under two tenths from the pole time in the tight session in fourth.
Alonso Lopez continued his improved weekend in fifth for Italjet Gresini, ahead of David Alonso, the last rider to have a chance to move up, the Colombian failed to improve tucked in behind Barry Baltus, so will start sixth for Aspar, just ahead of team-mate Daniel Holgado, who will fill seventh on the grid after bouncing back from a series of early cancelled laps.
Baltus, who scored pole in the USA, was eighth quickest for Fantic Racing, with Izan Guevara a crasher in Q2 for Blu Cru Pramac Yamaha. The best Boscoscuro in the session will need to move down the grid come Sunday after receiving a three place grid penalty overnight after riding slowly on Friday pulling a wheelie on track and crossing the apex in front of a group of riders behind.
Munoz completed the top 10 for Italtrans.
Aron Canet was the best of the riders to move up from Q1 for Elf Marc VDS in 11th.
Sergio Garcia finished the session without a time after an early fall. The Spaniard also has a double long lap penalty to serve in the race for his part in the turn one COTA crash.
Official Spanish Moto2 Records:
Fastest race lap: Manuel Gonzalez (2025) 1m40.351s
All time lap record: Deniz Oncu (2025) 1m39.564s
New lap record: Senna Agius (2026 -Practice) 1m38.973s
Best Pole: Manuel Gonzalez (2025) 1m39.858s
Q1 - Relief for Arbolino as fine margins leave Roberts and Oncu without progression.
A clean lap took Ayumu Sasaki (12th) from seventh to first guaranteeing his Q2 appearance for the Idrofoglia team. The Japanese rider was joined by Italtrans rider Adrian Huertas (16th), Canet and Tony Arboilno (14th) - but only just.
The morning FP2 session had been a wet affair, allowing Tony Arbolino to finish top in the morning. Back on a dry track the time were excruciatingly close, with the Fantic rider able to breathe a sigh of relief. Having been top with five minutes to go the Italian was sitting at the top of the timesheets.
Dropping to Sixth, he and Canet were chasing around Alberto Ferranadez in a last ditch effort to move back to the top four and graduate to Q2 which paid off for the duo.
With Moto2 times close in every session in Spain, Q1 was no exception, Deniz Oncu was pushed out and missed out on the next session by just 0.005s.
Joe Roberts was also shunted out, the American kept his helmet on as fractions of seconds saw him disappointed at sixth in the session and 20th on the grid for American Racing.
Alberto Ferrandez was last in Q1 and has a pit lane start penalty after his turn one lunge was the main cause of the pile up at the start of the Austin race.
Rookie Angel Piqueras picked up the worst of the injuries in that crash - a femur and ankle fracture. QJMotor have recruited Marcos Ramirez (21st) as his replacement.
Luca Lunetta, a recent returnee from injury himself, was looking likely to be top rookie in Moto2 instead before a bike issue saw him pull off track.
It was instead Taiyo Furusato leading the newcomers to the class in 10th in Q2, one place ahead of Jose Antonio Rueda who arrived as Moto3 champion and won the Jerez round from pole in the lightweight class last year.
