The first qualifying sessions in Moto2 for the 2026 season saw Senna Agius come out on top for pole position ahead of round 1 of 22 - the Thai Grand Prix in Buriram.

The Liqui Moly Dynavolt Intact GP Kalex rider took over from team-mate Manuel Gonzalez, who dominated Friday as the rider at the top of the timesheets, slotting in behind Aron Canet and then passing the Spaniard to set a 1m 34.576s pole lap - the Australians first time in the top spot on the grid.

Blu Cru Pramac Yamaha rider Izan Guevara remained the most consistent rider so far over the weekend, building on his win at the last race of 2025 with second on Friday, and in the morning FP2 session, to finish second again in Q2 on the Boscoscuro, just 0.028s slower in a very close session.

Daniel Holgado, who lead the earlier FP2 session, completes the front row after leading the way for a sizeable portion of Q2, the best of the Aspar riders.

Ivan Ortola also had a spell at the top of the timesheets for QJMotor -Frinsa - MSI on his way to fourth.

Celstino Vietti was fifth quickest for the SYNC Speed Up Team, just quicker than Collin Veijer who placed sixth for Red Bull KTM Ajo.

Gonzalez falters in crucial Q2 for seventh

Manuel Gonzalez finished day one top, as the winner from pole for the opening round at Buriram in 2025 on his way to finishing the year as runner-up, expectations were high.

Having set a new lap record on Friday he remained fastest overall, but after a solid start never really made significant enough gains when times were tight, leaving the Dynavolt rider seventh, just 0.220s away from pole at the Chang International Circuit.

Filip Salac was eighth fastest, now at American racing, Mario Aji was ninth for Idemitsu Honda Team Asia with David Alonso completing the top 10 on the second Asapr bike, the best of the riders to move on from Q1.

Angel Piqueras was once again the top rookie as he adjusts quickly to life in the intermediate class with QJ Motor -Frinsa -MSI in eleventh for his first Moto2 race.

After topping the final test and running fast on Friday Alex Escrig was out on track late again, as he was in the FP1 session - a final lunge in an effort to set a time saw him try to pass Sergio Garcia, leaving the pair in the gravel as he collected his fellow countryman.

Official Buriram Moto2 Records:
Fastest race lap: Manuel Gonzalez (2025) 1m 35.390s
Old All time lap record: Manuel Gonzalez (2025) 1m 34.591s
New all time lap record: Manuel Gonzalez (2026, Practice) 1m 34.501s

Q1 rush sees  Arbolino, Roberts miss out on progression

Q1 was awash with established riders, several with race wins to their name. Only four progression slots meant not everyone with the ability to put a strong lap together was going to get a shot at Q2.

Daniel Munoz (14th in Q2) lead the way, chipping away at his best to take over at the top heading into the final minute on track, out of danger in a close session, and was joined by long time session leader Deniz Oncu (17th in Q2) in second.

Aron Canet (15th in Q2) left it to the final seconds to climb from ninth to third, making up all the time the riders were losing in sector three on the last part of the track in the run to the line.

Those losing time allowed Alonso to hold on to the final progression slot.

That meant there was no room for early Q1 leader Alonso Lopez, who was pushed back to fifth for Gresini to line up in 19th for the Buriram race.

Luca Lunetta came close on his Moto2 debut but will be one place further back on the grid for SpeedRS.

Tony Arbolino was seventh, for 21st on the grid, with another race winner - as recently as Brno in an injury damaged 2025 campaign - Joe Roberts, set to fill 25th on the grid.

Another rider managing his return from injury, Moto3 reigning champion will be one place higher on the grid for Red Bull KTM Ajo.

Following a crash in Practice which saw him stretchered off, Adrian Huertas was declared unfit to continue the race weekend.
