Round Four – Stockholm, Sweden

SX1 Race One – Sprint

Joey Savatgy smoked the field in both Qualifying and Superpole, and then carried that speed over into the opening Sprint of the night in Stockholm, where the Quad Lock Honda rider overhauled early race leader Jason Anderson before stretching away to a three-second victory.

Christian Craig completed the opening SX1 podium of the night,

SX1 Race Two – Sprint

Jason Anderson and Vince Friese tussled for the lead early on as Joey Savatgy gave chase. Friese took the lead early on lap two, but it wasn’t long before both Anderson and Savatgy relegated the Stark rider to third and started pulling away.

On lap six, Savatgy went down after his front wheel got caught up on the back of Anderson’s rear wheel, with the Suzuki man coming out on top in that tactical game of cat and mouse after forcing Savatgy to check up in the middle of a tight right-hander.  Anderson eventually took the chequered flag two seconds clear of Savatgy.

Friese started going backwards on the penultimate lap, losing third place to Colt Nichols before then being demoted further by Jordi Tixier, Ander Valentin and Christian Craig.

Christian Craig had gone down late on lap two while trying to line up a move on Vince Friese for third place, and that demoted him outside the top ten. Craig regrouped, though, and charged back through the field to claim seven points for fourth after besting Tixier on the final lap.

SX1 Race Three – Main

Joey Savatgy got the best run out of the gates, but it was the wily Jason Anderson who carried the best line around the opening turn to take the early lead as Savatgy tried to hold off early challenges from Christian Craig.

Jason Anderson made the best of his clear air to pull away, and it didn’t take long for Savatgy to stretch away from his pursuers to turn the 12-lap contest into a two-man affair.

Colt Nichols went down on lap three while running in fourth place, and that was the end of his podium challenge.

Anderson went on to take the win by 2.5 seconds over Savatgy. That pair took the chequered flag a huge 20 seconds clear of Christian Craig in third.

SX1 Round

Joey Savatgy may have demonstrated the speed to dominate Qualifying and Superpole; however, Jason Anderson saved his speed for when it really mattered and backed that up with superior racecraft to win the round.

Savatgy and Anderson are now tied on points atop the SX1 Championship ahead of the decider in Cape Town next weekend, but Christian Craig is also right in that mix, only a single point behind.

With Ken Roczen not racing the South African finale, that means that it is down to three men for the title on December 13: Anderson, Savatgy and Craig are now the only title contenders, and one of them will take the big prize in Cape Town’s DHL Stadium next weekend.

Joey Savatgy

I made too many mistakes; my riding was strong, but the small mistakes cost me. It all comes down to the final round between the three of us. We’re so close, we’ve got nothing to lose. Fourth can’t catch us, so it’s time to let it all hang out.

Joey Savatgy
Christian Craig

The crash in race two hurt my overall. I’m just glad I got through clean. This was a track where you could easily end up on your head. Now the focus is on the finale.

Matt Moss missed this round through injury, and stepping up to keep his seat warm on the Venum Bud Kawasaki KX450 was Luke Clout. It was a tough outing for the 31-year-old, but Clout did manage to bag nine points in the final contest of the night despite a late fall.

SX2 Race One – Sprint

Michael Hicks blasted out of the blocks on the Stark to take the early lead ahead of Shane McElrath and Max Anstie as Enzo Lopes gave chase from fourth when the opening eight-lap SX2 bout got underway in Stockholm.   Lopes lost the rear on lap four, and his chances for a podium went down with his YZ250F.

As the second half of the race got underway, little separated Hicks, McElrath and Anstie. McErath made his move through to the lead on lap six, and Anstie immediately relegated Hicks further back to third. From there, McElrath and Anstie broke away from the Stark rider and went at it for the win.

Once through on McElrath, Anstie then pulled away to a clear victory.

Coty Shock got the better of Hicks on the final lap to knock the Stark rider off the podium.

22-year-old Aussie Alex Larwood carded a top-ten finish on his WSX debut with Quad Lock Honda, taking the flag just under 20-seconds behind the winner at the end of the eight-lap contest.

SX2 Race Two – Sprint

Max Anstie started where he left off when the second SX2 Sprint got underway. The championship leader was trailed by Enzo Lopes and Michael Hicks early on, and the trio remained in that order at the end of the eight-lap distance.

Anstie was the clear winner by more than four seconds over Lopes, while Hicks put the Stark on the podium.

Alex Larwood improved to seventh in this bout, finishing 16 seconds behind the winner but less than ten seconds from a podium.

SX2 Race Three – Main

Max Anstie got a great run off the line, but Enzo Lopes had the best line and put his head down to sprint away from the field on the opening lap. The closest early pursuer was his Arby’s Rick Ware Yamaha team-mate Coty Schock, but Schock went down on lap three, which allowed Shane McElrath to move up to second and Max Anstie into third.

By lap four, Lopes led McElrath by around four seconds.  McElrath had that gap down to just under a second by the chequered flag eight laps later, but Lopes held on to take the maximum points. Lopes also recorded the fastest lap of the race.

Shane McElrath

My riding was okay, but my starts were horrible. I’m happy I was able to make quick passes in the first two corners in races one and three. We made up great points this weekend. Max is out of reach, but we’re pushing hard for second.

Shane McElrath

Championship leader Max Anstie played it safe to come home 12 seconds behind the leading duo in third, but his wins in the Sprint races saw the Brit win the round to extend his championship lead to 41 points.

Alex Larwood finished the Main in seventh place ahead of the likes of Cullin Park, Coty Shock and Cole Thompson. A great debut for the young South Australian.

Alex Larwood

The track was rough, and the ruts were deep. My goal was to be consistent, minimise mistakes, and get through safely. I wanted a top ten, and we achieved that.

Alex Larwood

With only 45 points available at the Cape Town finale this weekend, only a no-score for Anstie, combined with a perfect three-win weekend for either Schock or McElrath, can prevent the 32-year-old GSM Yamaha rider from being crowned SX2 World Champion in South Africa.
