Blow by blow SX1/SX2 recap from AUSX finale in Adelaide

AUSX Boost Mobile Supercross 2025
Round Five – Adelaide, SA

The Australian Supercross Championship season wrapped up under an Adelaide sunset with a finale that summed up the championship perfectly. The track crew turned a flooded paddock into a tight but surprisingly racy layout, the Supercars crossover delivered a strong atmosphere, and the title fights in SX1 and SX2 produced genuine tension right to the final laps.

The fields thinned over the season, and the riders battered after a long year, and the gap in whoop speed between locals and the world’s best was once again hard to ignore, but the racing still delivered where it mattered.

Meanwhile, on the Gold Coast, WSX putting on a genuinely polished show the same weekend was a reminder that the broader industry is perhaps shifting, and the teams, organisers AME and governing body M.A. have plenty to weigh up heading into 2026 in terms of scheduling, facilities, internationals and local rider pathways.

Despite this gathering cloud, the fans kept turning up, the young riders came out (and kept) swinging, and the championship still very much means something. Adelaide proved that supercross in Australia remains worth the effort, as long as the sport keeps evolving with it.

Phil Nicoletti (CDR Yamaha, Yamaha) jumped first, but it was Dylan Walsh (KTM Racing Team, KTM) who forced his way to the front. Then Luke Clout (Empire Kawasaki, Kawasaki) lit the fuse, railing past everyone and checking out.

Soubeyras pressed Nicoletti hard for second, while the timing screens continued their night-long meltdown. Clout nabbed an angry, fired-up win.

SX1 Heat Two

Dean Wilson (Boost Mobile Honda Racing, Honda) got the jump, but privateer Liam Jackson (Honda) shocked the lot of them with the holeshot. Wilson restored the natural order soon after, but it gave Jackson a rare chance to tuck in behind a world-class rider and learn something.

Behind them, Mitchell Harrison (CDR Yamaha, Yamaha) and Aaron Tanti (CDR Yamaha, Yamaha) went to war for second. Tanti picked the pocket on the final lap.

Wilson called the track “soft and tricky” after Friday was a wash-out, with riders getting barely any seat time. Even so, he looked in control.

SX1 Final One

Luke Clout ripped the holeshot and immediately put a gap on the field.

Behind him, Aaron Tanti and Mitchell Harrison scrapped hard while Dean Wilson, needing only to finish solidly to lock up the title, sat calmly in fifth.

Wilson picked through with zero fuss, smooth passes, and his now signature whoops mastery. He moved into second and hunted Clout down.

Lapped traffic helped, but Wilson’s timing through the whoops made the real difference. He squared up the final corner before the long whoop lane, carried perfect drive and swept past into the lead. He cleared off to take a smart, measured, championship-sealing win.

Wilson said afterwards, between tears: “Feels good. This is for my mum. Thank you, everyone. I love being here, the team, the atmosphere… it was just a good season.

SX1 Final Two

Clout’s miserable luck continued with a stall in turn one, while Dylan Walsh launched into the lead.

Aaron Tanti wasn’t having that and stormed the inside line to take control.

Dean Wilson, already the champion, looked like a man still chasing one more win for the scrapbook. He hammered the whoops to go from fourth into the battle for the front.

Tanti surprised everyone by matching Wilson’s whoop speed, something few had managed all year. They ran nose to tail for half the race until one slower exit from Tanti let Wilson pounce again through his favourite section of the track.

From there, Wilson managed the gap perfectly, taking a commanding win to close out a championship that was defined by consistency and total professionalism.

Soubeyras deserves mention: he rode with sore ribs after a pre-event crash and still hung onto second in the championship.

Cedric Soubeyras

“This was one of the hardest weekends of my 25-year career. Breathing was difficult, I felt sick, and I couldn’t take much pain relief. But the team, the experience, everything was amazing. I’m proud of my riding and the result. I hope to return next year, and if I do, I’ll come earlier to prepare properly.”

Wilson then did the most Dean Wilson thing possible: a mad burnout on the podium until the bike steamed like a kettle. It was a release after losing his mother mid-season and riding through a storm of emotion. Pure class.

Dean Wilson

“That’s some of my best riding. I was locked in. Life is short, you have to give it your all, and you also have to have fun. Next year will be my fifth season with the team. I don’t know which championship we’ll race yet, but I feel at home with Honda.”

SX2 Qualifying

The casualties list looked like someone had thrown darts at the entry list. Only six riders in Heat 1 and eight in Heat 2. WSX didn’t poach many, but the heavy contract lockdowns for riders like Savatgy and Webb certainly hurt the local spectacle this year.

Still, the kids showed up swinging.

SX2 Heat One

Only six riders rolled out in the opening SX2 Heat, which sums up the state of the class after a brutal season. The commentators struggled because timing was a circus act. One moment, Cannon was first and last, and the TV graphics were as useful as a chocolate radiator.

Byron Dennis (Polyflor Honda Racing, Honda) got it done regardless. Stayed clean, ignored the chaos behind, and took a tidy win.

SX2 Heat Two

Ryder Kingsford (Yamaha Australia, Yamaha) grabbed the holeshot, and while the leaderboard continued its comedy routine, the riding didn’t. Kingsford rode like a bloke who wanted to seal the title right then and there. Larwood shadowed him, Budd stayed close, and the big three showed exactly why the championship came down to this trio.

SX2 Final One

The inside gate had been king all night, but only until turn one. A pile-up right after the corner left Kingsford buried, and the title suddenly swung Larwood’s way.

Rhys Budd (Honda Racing, Honda) escaped perfectly. Byron Dennis and Alex Larwood (Yamaha Australia,  Yamaha) chased hard.

Dennis stepped it up mid-race and hunted Budd down, taking the lead with authority.

Larwood threw everything at it because every point mattered.

Kingsford regrouped calmly and climbed steadily, picking off riders until he found third.

Dennis held firm to take his first win of the season and dropped the quote of the night: “Feels good to be here, I’ll tell you that much.”

Ignore the gaps in the results below, as timing problems continued to play havoc.

SX2 Final Two

A full Aussie grid, sun in their eyes, everything on the line.

Alex Larwood fired the perfect holeshot and checked out immediately.

Kingsford? Sixth into turn one. Not ideal.

Larwood, Budd and Cannon sprinted away.

Kingsford regrouped, stayed calm and went to work. Meanwhile, Larwood was riding like a bloke chasing destiny. He did absolutely everything right.

Then the moment: Kingsford hit the deck briefly in the shadows, but remounted and surged again. The maths swung back and forth every lap, but as soon as Kingsford reached fourth, the title belonged to him again.

Larwood won the final battle.

Alex Larwood

“It’s tough. I’ve had a lot of injuries throughout my career, and I made too many mistakes early on because I was being cautious. This weekend I proved to myself that I can win races, I just need to do it more consistently if I want to win a championship.”

Kingsford won the war and hit the limiter in celebration, probably out of relief more than anything. He then summed up his series beautifully.

Ryder Kingsford

“From laying on the deck at round one to being champion… I made it hard for myself. It’s bloody unbelievable. Thank you to my team, I couldn’t be here without them.”
