Round Four – Road America

Twins Cup

Paige and Vossberg split Road America Twins Cup wins

Road America delivered two tight Twins Cup contests across the weekend, with M4 ECSTAR Suzuki’s Bodie Paige breaking through for his first class victory on Saturday and Wisconsin’s own Hank Vossberg striking back on Sunday.

The 4.050-mile circuit produced the sort of slipstreaming finishes the Twins Cup class is known for. The winning margin in Race One was just 0.047s, while Race Two was even closer at the front, Vossberg beating Paige to the line by only 0.028s after a final-straight draft.

For Paige, the weekend marked a welcome return to form after missing Barber with concussion. For Vossberg, it was another reminder that the Robem Engineering Aprilia rider is building his championship campaign on consistency as much as outright speed.

Vossberg leads Wisconsin-heavy qualifying story

Vossberg set the tone in qualifying, putting his Robem Engineering Aprilia RS 660 on pole with a 2m23.575. The De Pere, Wisconsin, rider was more than a second clear of the field and close to class record pace around his home circuit.

Second on the grid went to Jody Barry, who returned to the class with Righteous Racin’ for a one-race tribute to late team owner Ray Hofman. Barry’s 2m24.730 placed him on the middle of the front row aboard the Aprilia RS 660 he had previously raced to multiple Twins Cup victories.

Paige completed the front row on the M4 ECSTAR Suzuki with a 2m25.002, putting the Australian teenager in a strong position to rebound after a frustrating interruption to his season.

Matthew Chapin qualified fourth on the second M4 ECSTAR Suzuki, ahead of Mahdi Salem and Isaac Woodworth.

Paige breaks through in Race One

Saturday’s opening race quickly became a three-rider fight between Paige, Barry and Vossberg. Paige had come into the weekend searching for his first Twins Cup win, and he judged the final sector well enough to make that breakthrough stick.

The Australian took the chequered flag by 0.047s from Barry, with Vossberg only 0.149s from victory in third. Paige also set the fastest lap of the race with a 2m23.814, making the win more than just a last-lap tow job.

Barry’s second place carried its own significance. His return with Righteous Racin’ was built around honouring Hofman, and a podium at the team’s home round gave the weekend a strong emotional thread.

Vossberg’s third place extended his run of consecutive podium finishes, keeping the championship leader firmly in control even on a day when he did not quite have the last-lap answer.

Behind the lead trio, Chapin finished fourth, Mahdi Salem fifth, Kevin Olmedo sixth and Woodworth seventh. The next group was also tightly packed, with Kyle Ohnsorg, Sam Drane, Logan Cunnison and Chase Brown covered by less than three seconds across eighth to 11th.

Vossberg wins the Sunday drag race

Race Two developed into another front-group contest, but this time Vossberg made sure the home crowd had the result it wanted. Paige launched hard and led early, before Vossberg chased him down and moved to the front.

Woodworth then put the Karns/TST Industries Racing Suzuki into the lead on lap three, briefly turning the race into a three-way tactical battle. Vossberg fought back, Paige had another turn at the front, and the lead continued to change as the seven-lap race approached its decisive moments.

On the penultimate lap, Vossberg put the Aprilia back into the lead and tried to ride defensively. Paige still found a way through, but Vossberg had clearly tested the run to the line and used the draft at precisely the right time.

Vossberg slipstreamed past Paige on the run to the chequered flag, winning by 0.028s. Woodworth completed the podium only 0.165s from victory, making it a three-rider photo-finish scrap.

Barry finished fourth and still set the fastest lap of the race with a 2m23.909, underlining that he had the speed to run with the leaders even if the final result did not match Saturday’s podium. Chapin was fifth, Olmedo sixth and Salem seventh.

Paige closes in as Vossberg keeps control

Paige’s 1-2 weekend moved him to 107 championship points and third overall, behind Vossberg and Chapin. It also confirmed that the Australian is back on the pace after being forced to sit out the previous round.

Vossberg, meanwhile, leaves Road America with 177 points and a commanding 62-point advantage over Chapin, who sits second on 115. Paige is now third on 107, with Sam Drane fourth on 96 and Woodworth fifth on 93.

The points gap is substantial, but Road America showed there is no shortage of riders capable of making Vossberg work for it. Paige now has a class win to his name, Barry reminded the paddock of his Twins Cup pedigree, and Woodworth was right in the fight on Sunday.

For Vossberg, though, a home-track win and another podium banked made it a near-perfect Wisconsin weekend. The championship leader did not win both races, but he left with the trophy that mattered most to the local crowd and an even stronger grip on the Twins Cup title chase.
