Round One – COTA
MotoAmerica Talent Cup returned to COTA as part of the Red Bull Grand Prix of The Americas weekend, with the 14-rider field contesting the opening round of the North American Road to MotoGP pathway on identical Krämer APX-350 MA machinery.

For Australian fans, the focus was squarely on Sam Drane and Jake Paige, with Drane arriving in Texas as the highest-placed returning rider from 2025 after finishing third overall and taking nine podiums last year.

Rookie Nathan Gouker secured pole with a 2:27.429, while Kensei Matsudaira qualified second on 2:27.664. Drane was a consistent third through all three Friday sessions and locked in P3 on the grid with a 2:27.880, while Paige emerged as a genuine contender by climbing to fourth with a 2:28.196. That left the lead quartet covered by less than eight-tenths heading into Saturday’s doubleheader.

Kensei Matsudaira’s (#74) second place was not from a lack of trying, as he attempted multiple inside lunges for the lead. Photo by Brian J. Nelson.Gouker survived a major moment exiting Turn 1 on lap three, regrouped and led the final four laps to win by 0.183s.
Matsudaira was second, Paige completed the podium on debut, and Drane missed out by just 0.213s, with only 0.526s covering the top four at the flag.

Race Two

Championship Picture
That leaves the championship finely poised after the opening round. Gouker and Matsudaira departed Austin tied at the top of the standings, while Drane and Paige are tied for second after effectively swapping third and fourth across the two races.
For Drane, it was an assured start to the campaign and another reminder that he is a genuine title contender.
For Paige, it was an impressive opening statement, with a podium, a lap record and front-running pace straight away in his first Talent Cup weekend at COTA.
