Edwards beats Nelson in opening Morgan Park Supersport fight

Tom Edwards took maximum points in the opening Kawasaki Supersport / Next Gen race at Morgan Park, holding off BCperformance Kawasaki team-mate Hayden Nelson after early drama removed several of the expected contenders.

Simpson stranded before the start

The race started without one of the expected front-runners after Olly Simpson struck trouble on the out-lap. The DesmoSport Ducati crew worked desperately to chase down the gremlin on the grid, but the South Australian did not make the start, a costly blow to his Next Gen championship hopes.

Farnsworth leads before Toparis takes over

Jake Farnsworth led the field into Turn 1, with Tom Toparis, Edwards, Nelson and Valentino Knezovic giving chase. Farnsworth’s challenge unravelled almost immediately; however, a slide halfway around the opening lap opened the door for Toparis. The Stop and Seal Ducati rider needed no second invitation, sweeping through to take control.

On lap two, Farnsworth slowed dramatically and was shuffled down the order before returning to the pits with an engine problem, a disappointing early exit for the leading Supersport qualifier and his Worth Racing Yamaha squad. That promoted Edwards to second, with Nelson third, ahead of Knezovic and Sam Pezzetta.

Toparis crashes from the lead

Toparis had looked capable of stretching the race once he found clear air. He went 1m15.394 on lap two and then improved again to 1m15.313 on lap three, briefly establishing himself as the fastest rider on track. But his afternoon ended almost immediately afterwards when he crashed at Turn 1, handing the race lead to Edwards.

Nelson had just produced the fastest lap of the race, a 1m15.300 on lap three, as he began to reel in his BCperformance Kawasaki team-mate. That lap also established a new Next Gen race lap record, eclipsing the previous class benchmark of 1m16.334 set by Luca Durning in 2025.

BCperformance battle goes to the final lap

From there, the race became a Kawasaki team contest. Edwards led from lap four onwards, but Nelson rarely let him breathe. The gap was only 0.483s at the end of lap four, 0.189s one lap later, and never blew out beyond six-tenths across the middle phase of the race. Nelson had the ZX-6R in all sorts of shapes as he tried to pressure Edwards into an error, while Edwards controlled the pace of proceedings up front.

Knezovic initially stayed in touch with the Kawasaki pairing and was only 2.216s from the lead at the end of lap seven. From half-race distance, however, the lead duo began to edge away. Knezovic battled tyre wear as the race progressed, but still crossed the line third outright and first of the traditional Supersport runners, a result that significantly strengthened his championship hand.

Nelson launched his attack on the final lap and briefly found a way through on Edwards, but Edwards responded in kind and won the run to the chequered flag. The margin was 1.046s at the flag, with Knezovic 9.348s from the winner in third.

Knezovic extends Supersport lead

Pezzetta claimed fourth outright and second in Supersport, 31.002s from the lead, while Jordy Simpson completed the top five.

Eddie Leeson was sixth outright and third in Next Gen on the Ducati V2, ahead of Ghage Plowman, Flynn Jacobs and Lauchy Williams.

Along with Simpson, Farnsworth and Toparis, Josh Soderland was another key non-finisher after stopping at Turn 6 on lap three.

The result leaves Edwards with a narrow lead in the Next Gen standings on 168 points, only two clear of Nelson. Simpson remains third on 109, while Toparis is fourth on 97 after his DNF.

In the traditional Supersport ranks, Knezovic’s class win moves him to 164 points, extending his advantage over Farnsworth to 21 points after Farnsworth’s early retirement.

The field was disappointingly small to start with, but ultimately only nine machines made it to the chequered flag.
