Dakar Rally 2026 Update
After Tuesday’s Stage Nine

Dakar Rally competitors negotiated Stage Nine on Tuesday, with Australia’s Daniel Sanders extending his overall lead after moving back to the front after team-mate Luciano Benavides had a difficult day. At this stage, Ricky Brabec looks to be Sander’s biggest threat.

2026 Dakar Rally Stage Nine – Daniel Sanders

After the rest stage, we saw Sanders in the lead, 45 seconds clear of Honda HRC’s Brabec, with teammate Luciano Benavides next closest, followed by another Honda in the form of Tosha Schareina, 10m15s and 11m56s off the leader, respectively.

Ricky Brabec – 2026 Dakar Rally Stage Eight

Back into the action with stage seven, Benavides took the win with Edgar Canet making for a KTM 1-2, with Adrien Van Beveren rounding out the podium. Despite finishing fourth, however, Sanders extended his lead over Brabec, while Benavides closed down that gap.

Edgar Canet – 2026 Dakar Rally Stage Eight

Stage eight saw another great performance from Benavides, flipping the overall lead his way, but only by 10-seconds, with Sanders the stage runner-up and second overall. Brabec remained consistent, trailing the lead by 4m47s, with the gap back to fourth-placed Schareina a larger 20 minutes.

Luciano Benavides – 2026 Dakar Rally Stage Seven

Marathon stage nine saw Schareina back on top, leading home Sanders and Michael Docherty by almost five-minutes, with Sanders consolidating his leading position to 6m24s from Brabec and 7m05s to Benavides.

2026 Dakar Rally Stage Nine – Tosha Schareina

Now riders have the second half of the marathon to complete, with just four stages left to compete, the big question being whether Sanders can continue his form and consistency and defend his Dakar title.

Luke Clout tops Sunday at ADAC Supercross Dortmund

Australia’s Luke Clout impressed over the weekend, racing for the Kawasaki Motul Arrow team at the ADAC Supercross Dortmund, where he claimed the SX1 Sunday win.

The King of Dortmund title went to Greg Aranda as top honours over the three days of racing, with Prince of Dortmund going to Calvin Fonvieille.

Aranda defended his title, with Credric Soubeyras also recognised as the most successful rider in the event’s history, with the event cheered on by 25,000 fans. Aranda took a narrow victory on 69-points over teammate Maxime Despray, with just two-points separating the duo.

Aussie Luke Clout won two of the three heats on Sunday, sharing, “To be honest, it took me three days to crack the code for the rhythm section and start landing triple-triples there. This track was one of the most special experiences of my career. I’ve proven that I can compete at the very top in Europe as well. I felt like part of a family with Team Pfeil – I’d love to come back anytime!”

Fonvieille took out the SX2 class on a perfect 75-points, and has been on the podium every year since 2019. Second went to Mickael Lamarque with Jace Kessler third, both holding 51-points.

In the 250SMX Class, Japan’s Jo Shimoda captured his first championship, defeating two-time titleholder Haiden Deegan in a thrilling, winner‑take‑all showdown under the lights in Las Vegas. Shimoda also became the sport’s first-ever Japanese champion.

  • SMX World Championship Playoff 1 will take place on Saturday, September 12, at Historic Crew Stadium in Columbus, OH.

Australian Speedway Championship

The dominance of Jack Holder continued at round three of the Australian Speedway Championship at Mildura last week, cementing himself as the man to beat ahead of the Gillman finale.

The 29-year-old was first to the flag in the final ahead of Rohan Tungate, Jaimon Lidsey and Keynan Rew, the in-form rider moving out to a four-point lead over Lidsey on the points tally ahead of the weekend finale in South Australia. Tungate ranked third overall on 43 points, from Zach Cook (32) and Rew (27) heading to Gillman.

Holder and Lidsey earned their places in the final courtesy of being the highest points scorers from the 20 heats, while Rew and Tungate contested the final as a result of being victorious in semi-final one and two, respectively.

Round Four

Holder became the 2026 Australian speedway champion after producing yet another towering performance at the final round in Gillman on Friday.

The world No. 5 got the job done early, building an insurmountable margin over main rival Jaimon Lidsey in the final wave of Gillman heats, which took all the pressure off heading into the round four final.

And it showed, too, as Holder checked out in the decider to make it four round wins in succession – the perfect launching pad for another frenetic season in the UK and Europe, which will also include Speedway Grand Prix action as he looks to become the first Aussie world champion since Jason Doyle in 2017.

Rohan Tungate was second in the final – his first defeat of the night – ahead of Lidsey and Ben Cook.

Holder completed the championship – which started with a double-header in Albury before a scorcher in Mildura – with 72 points out of a possible 76, with Lidsey (64) holding onto second ahead of a fast-finishing Tungate (61), followed by Zach Cook (41), Keynan Rew (39) and Ben Cook (37), who missed Mildura due to illness.

It’s Holder’s second Aussie title in the senior speedway ranks after first winning in 2023.

“It’s sometimes harder to win the second one than the first, and that’s certainly been the case for me,” said Holder. “I had to be on my toes the whole championship with Jaimon there the whole time. I’ve spent plenty of money sending good stuff out here over recent years, as the Aussie title is hard work – and when some of the local boys come back home they are different riders to what they are overseas. But it’s all paid off so I am very happy.”

Ben Cook and Lidsey had won their semis to join Tungate and Holder in the finale. Rew, Zach Cook, Justin Sedgmen, Mitchell McDiarmid, Reid Battye and Tate Zischke also saw semi-final action on a tricky Gillman surface.

McDiarmid, 17, finished eighth in the championship, one spot behind Jacob Hook, while Zischke and Sedgmen saw out the top 10.

Keynan Rew tops Oceania Speedway Championship

Keynan Rew took out the 2026 CBS Bins FIM Oceania Speedway Championship at Gillman (SA) on January 11, defeating compatriots Rohan Tungate and Jaimon Lidsey in the final and booking himself a spot in this year’s Speedway Grand Prix (SGP) qualification process.

It was the first major win in the local senior ranks for the 22-year-old Queenslander, who will now battle for a spot in the 2027 SGP series alongside Jack Holder and Lidsey, who earned their spots via the 2026 Australian Speedway Championship, which concluded at Gillman two days earlier The 2026 SGP qualifying process begins in late May.

In a slick field of Aussie and international stars at the Speedway Riders Association of South Australia-promoted event, the FIM Oceania Speedway Championship was an extraordinarily tight contest from start to finish, keeping the healthy Adelaide crowd entertained.

Ten out of the 16 riders won at least one heat, with Rew’s top score of 13 points earning him a ticket straight into the final – while a ‘deep dive’ countback saw Luke Becker join him after the American finished on equal points (12) with Tungate, Lidsey and Ben Cook.

Tungate and Lidsey then won their semis – Tungate over Cook, seven-time British champion Scott Nicholls and Justin Sedgmen, while Lidsey edged out Mitchell McDiarmid, Luke Harrison and Leon Flint – to set up a spicy final.

Unfortunately for Becker, he self-destructed on lap one of the final and crashed out unhurt, leaving only the three Aussies to contest the re-run.

Tungate again got the initial jump, but a sizzling move around the outside by Rew saw him move into the lead by the end of lap one. The crafty Tungate tried to manufacture a return serve – and with an SGP qualifying spot on the line, it was always coming – but Rew held his nerve to claim victory. Lidsey flashed across the line in third.

Blow by blow recap from AMA SX season opener at Anaheim

The opening round of the AMA Supercross Championship was staged last weekend at Anaheim, launching the 2026 season amid significant off-season change.

2026 Monster Energy AMA Supercross Championship - Round One - Anaheim2026 Monster Energy AMA Supercross Championship – Round One – Anaheim

Many of the big hitters had switched brands in the off-season, including Eli Tomac to KTM, Chase Sexton to Kawasaki, Jason Anderson to Suzuki, and Jorge Prado back to KTM. With pre-season favourite Jett Lawrence sidelined through injury, the established form guide was immediately upended.

450

2026 Monster Energy AMA Supercross Championship – Round One – Anaheim

The 450 Main was marred by a sickening crash that saw both Malcolm Stewart and Justin Barcia taken to the medical centre. Riders were called back around to the gates, where they waited for that carnage to be cleared.

While Malcolm Stewart was struggling to walk and obviously in serious pain from a shoulder injury after eventually managing to get to his feet with the help of medical staff, Barcia’s situation looked much more serious. Ultimately, the Ducati rider was deemed not to be in danger, but it is fair to say the AMA Supercross paddock held its collective breath for some time.

2026 Monster Energy AMA Supercross Championship – Round One – Anaheim

When the gates dropped again 15 minutes after the incident, Prado again scored the holeshot and led the opening lap ahead of Tomac, Hunter Lawrence, Roczen and Anderson. Tomac seized the lead late in the first lap, drawing a strong reaction from the crowd, and went on to quickly assert control.

2026 Monster Energy AMA Supercross Championship – Round One – Anaheim – Eli Tomac took charge

Prado could resist the advances of Roczen for only the opening few laps, but once the German got through, he immediately started to sprint away from the young Spaniard.

2026 Monster Energy AMA Supercross Championship – Round One – Anaheim

Tomac had a three-second lead three minutes into the contest, and while that advantage ebbed and flowed a little, it remained fairly constant throughout the remaining 16 laps of the race.

Tomac and Roczen were the only riders to record 65-second laps as they pulled away from the field, the pair took the chequered flag more than 25-seconds ahead of Prado.

Hunter Lawrence rode a measured race, working his way past Cooper Webb, Dylan Ferrandis and eventually Jason Anderson to claim fourth, late in the contest. Webb tangled briefly with Lawrence a few laps from the finish and went down, dropping several positions. The defending champion ultimately finished seventh, just behind team-mate Justin Cooper.

2026 Monster Energy AMA Supercross Championship – Round One – Anaheim – Hunter Lawrence

Sexton’s fastest lap was 1.3 seconds slower than those recorded by Tomac and Roczen. While the Kawasaki rider showed flashes of pace, he never appeared fully comfortable and spent much of the race managing rather than attacking. He finished eighth, collecting 14 points in a subdued debut for the Pro Circuit Kawasaki squad. Sexton looked like he was out just to survive the season opener rather than try to forge his way through a podium challenge.

2026 Monster Energy AMA Supercross Championship – Round One – Anaheim – Chase Sexton

Conversely, what a debut in orange for Eli Tomac. KTM have been through a difficult time of late, in many ways, but their two new signings kicking off season ’26 on the podium had Roger De Coster looking quite serene.

2026 Monster Energy AMA Supercross Championship – Round One – Anaheim – Eli Tomac

Dylan Ferrandis and Aaron Plessinger rounded out the top ten ahead of Christian Craig, Colt Nichols, Joey Savatgy and Justin Hill.

2026 Monster Energy AMA Supercross Championship – Round One – Anaheim

Austin Forkner made an encouraging 450 debut with Triumph, keeping his nose clean and bringing home seven points for a 15th-place finish ahead of Beta’s Mitch Oldenburg.

2026 Monster Energy AMA Supercross Championship – Round One – Anaheim – Austin Forkner
Eli Tomac – P1

“This one feels good! Leading from the get-go like that is tough, because you need to really maintain focus the whole time, but my motorcycle was the best it was all day in the Main Event after a slight adjustment from the Heat Race. We went in the right direction, and this is the perfect way to start a new season and with my new team in Red Bull KTM Factory Racing. After a big off-season with both myself and the team testing and developing all over the place, it means a lot to achieve this early success together.”

2026 Monster Energy AMA Supercross Championship – Round One – Anaheim – Eli Tomac and Jorge Pardo with Team KTM
Ken Roczen – P2

“Anaheim is done and dusted. We had a really good day, the entire day in qualifying, the heat race, and the main. We got first in the heat race and then went to the main, where we had a really good battle with [the race leader]. We pretty much kept the same gap for the entire race, and [both of us] put a big gap on third. We just rode our own race. The track was really tricky, very slippery, and it broke down, so it was very easy to make mistakes. I’m really happy to get away with a second place here; it’s a great start to the season, and now the focus is on the next round.”

2026 Monster Energy AMA Supercross Championship – Round One – Anaheim – Ken Roczen
Jorge Prado – P3

“This is really ahead of my expectations – the goal for this weekend was to just get through each session and do the best that I can. I had a great preparation leading into this year, but I am still so new to Supercross. Getting the Heat Race win was awesome, but I am really happy with my Main Event and to be on the podium. I rode within my limits, and still don’t have a lot of words to describe my feelings right now, but all I can say is that hard work always pays off! It’s great to start the season this way, so now we’ll keep learning and look forward to a new opportunity next week.”

2026 Monster Energy AMA Supercross Championship – Round One – Anaheim – Jorge Prado
Hunter Lawrence – P4

“That was my best A1 to date. I said to myself that I’d be content with a top-five finish. I really wanted to get the win, but we’re still working, chipping away. I think we’re in a great spot to make progress where we want to and hopefully get that worked out. But I’m okay with tonight, for sure; this is one of my worst venues if you look back over my career, so I’m happy to move forward.”

2026 Monster Energy AMA Supercross Championship – Round One – Anaheim – Hunter Lawrence
Jason Anderson – P5

“We ended up fifth on the night. It was a pretty eventful night for everyone, and for me it was solid. I’ve been a little bit under the weather but was able to manage the race with a decent start and ended up fifth. We’ll see if we can get better from there.”

2026 Monster Energy AMA Supercross Championship – Round One – Anaheim – Jason Anderson
Chase Sexton – P8

“The day started off well with earning fastest qualifier. I felt really comfortable on the track and felt like I had the speed to contend up front. Unfortunately, I had a couple of mistakes during the heat race and main event that forced me to work my way through the field. It’s only the first round, and we have a good base to build off. We’ve got some work to do, but I know we’re capable of improving and putting up better results next week.”

2026 Monster Energy AMA Supercross Championship – Round One – Anaheim – Chase Sexton
Aaron Plessinger – P10

“Obviously, this wasn’t the Anaheim 1 that I wanted. It started well, but I hit the ground with Coop [Cooper Webb] in the Heat Race, which was unfortunate, but it happens. Good to get the Round 1 jitters out, and I had a few good starts today actually, which was nice. We have a good direction, my setup is in the ballpark, and I came from dead-last in the Main Event to 10th place, which I thought was a good way to rebound. It was a decent ending to a tough start, and now we’ll go back and do some homework for next weekend.”

2026 Monster Energy AMA Supercross Championship – Round One – Anaheim – Aaron Plessinger
Christian Craig – P11

“We improved from first practice to the Main Event. It’s been close to a year since I lined up against this field, and I rode tight at times, but there are clear positives. This won’t be an overnight turnaround, we need to find a second, to a second and a half, to be racing inside the top five. The team is focused, we have a plan, and we’ll work hard to get there. Considering I missed the first nine rounds last year with injury, this is a positive start.”

2026 Monster Energy AMA Supercross Championship – Round One – Anaheim – Christian Craig
Colt Nichols – P12

“2026 A1 was better than 2025, so we will take it. In my heat race I had a crash off the start. My bike got a little tweaked up, but I came back to 12th. I had to go the LCQ, so I made it kind of hard on myself today. We started last in the main; we had to fight all the way up to a P12. I’m happy. We’ve got a lot of room to improve so that’s the exciting thing. It was a good first race and I still feel like we’ve got a lot of room to go, so we’ll keep plugging away and try and get better every week.”

2026 Monster Energy AMA Supercross Championship – Round One – Anaheim – Colt Nichols
Joey Savatgy – P13

“That could have been much worse. I was pushing to make passes quickly and put myself in a bad position after a poor start. You can’t give away time in this field and expect to make it back without riding over your head. The positive is I’m really enjoying the bike, the team has done a great job. Thirteenth in points is better than last year’s opener, and now we focus on starts.”

2026 Monster Energy AMA Supercross Championship – Round One – Anaheim – Joey Savatgy
Austin Forkner – P15

“My riding was good in the Main Event. It was just a little too much of a rollercoaster. I was figuring out when to push and when to conserve energy. There are many aspects of racing that you run into in the longer 450SX main event. We will make some adjustments this week, but we are close and it was a solid debut in the premier class for me and the team.”

2026 Monster Energy AMA Supercross Championship – Round One – Anaheim – Austin Forkner
RJ Hampshire – P18

“A1 was a challenge all day. I started out alright and was building throughout the day, but then in the Heat Race I unfortunately got tagged and went down. We aimed for an entry into the Main Event from there, which we were able to, and I was in a decent spot after the race restart once we got going in the Main. By the third or fourth lap in, I had a big one in the whoops, so that made for a tough night in the end. The main thing for Round 1 was building experience, getting some data for the bike to further develop a Supercross setting for me, and I think we’ll be much better from next weekend onwards.”

2026 Monster Energy AMA Supercross Championship – Round One – Anaheim – 250 Main

Ryder DiFrancesco and Chance Hymas broke clear early in the 250 Main, while top qualifier Levi Kitchen crashed at the opening turn. Heat race winner Haiden Deegan was buried outside the top ten in the opening laps.

2026 Monster Energy AMA Supercross Championship – Round One – Anaheim – 250 Main

Max Anstie quickly advanced to third and set about chasing Hymas for second, while DiFrancesco held a small advantage at the front three laps in. Anstie moved past Hymas and immediately closed down DiFrancesco. After biding his time, Anstie made his move mid-race, then went on to set the fastest lap and pulled away to secure a decisive victory.

2026 Monster Energy AMA Supercross Championship – Round One – Anaheim – Ryder DiFrancesco and Chance Hymas

Hymas later passed DiFrancesco to claim second and then opened a comfortable gap, while Deegan charged through the field to fourth by the chequered flag, closing rapidly on a fading DiFrancesco but running out of laps. Deegan slowed after the finish to acknowledge his Star Racing Yamaha team-mate’s win.

2026 Monster Energy AMA Supercross Championship – Round One – Anaheim – Max Anstie

Kitchen recovered strongly from his opening-lap crash, climbing to sixth behind Michael Mosiman and recording the second-fastest lap of the race, underlining his potential for the season ahead.

2026 Monster Energy AMA Supercross Championship – Round One – Anaheim – 250 Podium

Cameron McAdoo had been running fourth early on before crashing and later stopping for mechanical attention. He finished a lap down and out of the points, though his early pace suggested he was capable of a podium challenge.

2026 Monster Energy AMA Supercross Championship – Round One – Anaheim – Levi Kitchen

Many had tipped Deegan to dominate the 250 championship in 2026. While that may still prove accurate, Anaheim suggested the task may be more competitive than early predictions indicated.

Chance Hymas – P2

“The first round at A1 was really good for me—third overall in qualifying, third in the heat race, second in the main was really good. I wanted some consistent laps; I made a few mistakes, but we’ll clean it up for next weekend.”

2026 Monster Energy AMA Supercross Championship – Round One – Anaheim – Chance Hymas
Ryder DiFrancesco – P3

“Today was good! All day, I just wanted to be on the board in each practice, then the Heat Race was just okay. In the Main Event, we got the holeshot, and then I just tried not to look back from there – I wanted to lead as many laps as I could, and tonight was a big learning step. We’d like to lead more laps next weekend, continue to build, and try to land on the podium like this each weekend to give us a good shot at the title. This cements the work we’ve done in the off-season – I’m ready for more, now.”

2026 Monster Energy AMA Supercross Championship – Round One – Anaheim – Ryder DiFrancesco
Levi Kitchen – P6

“It felt good to start the season with the fastest qualifying time. The speed is there, and the bike felt great all day. The main event didn’t go our way off the start, and the first-corner pileup set me back, but coming through the field to salvage a sixth is something we can build on. It’s a long season, and this is just the beginning.”

2026 Monster Energy AMA Supercross Championship – Round One – Anaheim – Levi Kitchen
Cameron McAdoo – P22

“It felt great to be back behind the gate and racing again. The heat race showed what we’re capable of, and I felt comfortable up front. The main event was frustrating. I had a moment on the track that was out of my control, which forced me into the mechanics area for a bit. I went back out and salvaged as much of the race as I could, but tonight wasn’t our night. We’ll take what we learned and come back better next weekend.”
