Doohan won at Eastern Creek as Beattie broke through
On this day, April 12, back in 1992, the Australian Grand Prix at Eastern Creek delivered a home win for Mick Doohan and a defining early career moment for Daryl Beattie. Called up to replace the injured Wayne Gardner, Beattie finished third in just his second race in the premier class to claim the first podium of his 500cc career.

Doohan won the second round of the 1992 world championship ahead of Wayne Rainey, but Beattie’s stand-in ride gave the race an added place in Australian GP history. In hindsight, Eastern Creek became both an early marker in Doohan’s title challenge and one of the first real signs of Beattie’s world-level potential.

After replacing Gardner in Australia, he also stood in for him in Malaysia, finished sixth there, then later teamed with Gardner to win the 1992 Suzuka 8 Hour. When Gardner retired at the end of that season, Beattie moved up to join Doohan in the factory Honda squad for 1993.

Doohan, meanwhile, went on to win the opening four rounds of the 1992 season before his year was disrupted by the serious Assen crash that saw him nearly lose his leg from post-surgery complications, and miss four rounds as a result.
Why the 1992 result still matters
Wayne Rainey eventually secured the 1992 500cc world title by four points, which gives that Eastern Creek result even more historical significance when viewed from today’s perspective
