Round One – Phillip Island
Kawasaki Supersport

Race Three

After experiencing almost perfect conditions on Friday and Saturday, the drizzle had arrived ahead of the final ASBK Supersport bout of the weekend just before midday on Sunday at Phillip Island. Not only were tyres being swapped on the grid, but those with the means were also changing their rear shock to a softer option to suit the damp conditions.

Tom Edwards scored the holeshot this time around ahead of Olly Simpson, Hayden Nelson and Roberto Tamburini, but then Jake Farnsworth gazumped them all to take the early lead at Southern Loop and then dropped the hammer! Farnsworth took his brave pills this morning as he was more than a second ahead by Hayshed on the opening lap in what were very sketchy conditions.

Farnsworth continued to streak away as Olly Simpson strove to keep a charging Will Nassif and Tom Edwards at bay.

As the laps wore on, Olly Simpson broke away from Nassif and Nelson and started to close down Farnsworth.

Hayden Nelson then really hit his stride as the race approached the halfway mark and reeled in Simpson and Farnsworth.

Simpson took the lead from Farnsworth on lap five, and Will Nassif then pushed Farnsworth further back to third as Hayden Nelson looked to challenge from fourth. The track was drying quickly, and their wets were quickly struggling.

Will Nassif then hit the front as the race reached two-thirds distance, as Tom Edwards and Top Toparis looked to turn the leading quartet into a sextet.

Olly Simpson moved back into the lead as they started lap eight, as Farnsworth attacked Nassif for second at turn one and made the move stick.

Little separated the top six as they started the penultimate lap. Simpson leading Farnsworth, Tom Edwards up to third, Tom Toparis fourth and Will Nassif shuffled back to fifth and battling with Hayden Nelson.

Last lap board and Simpson had a small buffer over Tom Toparis and Jake Farnsworth, but that was gobbled up by Southern Loop.  Tom Toparis was looking for a way past Olly Simpson at every turn as Farnsworth and Edwards traded blows over the final step on the rostrum.

Olly Simpson and Tom Toparis split either way around a backmarker at Hayshed; it was a heart-in-mouth moment for all concerned.

Simpson then had a big slide at Lukey, which gave Toparis the opportunity to take the lead.

Toparis and Simpson were then nose-to-tail through turn twelve and line abreast across the stripe, but who had won?

Tom Toparis was given the nod for the win by three-thousandths of a second on the timing screens. However, a subsequent video review saw that changed to a win for Simpson by a single thousandth of a second…

Tom Edwards was a couple of bike lengths further behind to round out the podium.

Early leader Jake Farnsworth was a second further behind in fourth place by a narrow margin over Hayden Nelson.

Will Nassif’s mid-race charge to the front and podium challenge waned in the final laps, but the youngster still bagged great points for sixth.
