Round One – Phillip Island
Road & Race Supersport 300

Supersport 300 Qualifying

The battle for top spot in the SS300 category was an interstate tussle between young Western Australian Orlando Peovitis (Kawasaki) and South Australian Tara Morrison (Kawasaki). In the end, it was the Sandgroper that edged out the Croweater while Jordy Simpson (Yamaha) made it three South Australians on the front row.

Supersport 300 Race One

Road & Race Supersport 300 Race One – Image RbMotoLens

Riley Nauta took the early advantage when the opening eight-lap Supersport bout of the season got underway late on Friday afternoon at Phillip Island. Trailing the diminutive youngster closely were Tara Morrison, Tyler King, Jordy Simpson, Matthew Ritter, Phoenix O’Brien and poleman Orlando Peovitis.  Nauta kept the challengers at bay as the top six started to stretch away from the field as the race approached the halfway mark.

Tyler King moved to the fore with three laps to run as Tara Morrison then relegated Nauta further back to third. Tara Morrison then took her turn up front, Riley Nauta moved back up to second, Phoenix O’Brien was now third, while Jordy Simpson had pushed Tyler King back to fifth just ahead of Orlando Peovitis.  Then Nauta was back in the lead, then King again, then Nauta…

Matthew Ritter had been running in seventh place, 12-seconds behind the top six, but was black-flagged for a technical problem on the penultimate lap.

Jai Russo crashed out on the final lap at turn four.

At the last lap board, Riley Nauta had the biggest lead of the race, eight-tenths of a second.  Tyler King was in second and Jordy Simpson third.

Nauta extended his lead on the final run around the back of the circuit to take the chequered flag 1.85 seconds clear of Tyler King, who crossed the line side by side with Jordy Simpson, Phoenix O’Brien, Orlando Peovitis and Tara Morrison in an almost photo finish.

That lead sextet took the flag 15-seconds clear of seventh placed Jake Senior, who had Rossi McAdam, Lincoln Knight, Tom Nicolson, Seth Dellow, Toby James, David Coward and Nixon Frost in close company.

Orlando Peovitis may have finished fifth but his pole time and fastest lap of the race shows he has the speed but perhaps has a little more racecraft to learn before he maximises his potential.

The second SS300 race is slated to get underway at 0850 on Saturday morning before the third and final bout of the opening round at 0910 on Sunday morning.

Supersport 300 Race Two

South Australians Tara Morrison and Jordy Simpson got away well, but ultimately poleman Orlando Peovitis took the early lead at turn one. Morrison moved back to the front as they negotiated turn three, and Tara certainly had her elbows out this morning!

With six laps to run, the leading group really started to shuffle the pack with the top nine riders covered by less than a second. Tyler King up front, Orlando Peovitis, Tara Morrison up front, then Riley Nauta and Jordy Simpson took their turns to lead.

Officials signalled that the start was under investigation, suggesting there could be a post-race shake-up of the results. We didn’t have to wait that long, as Miles Nicholes was given a jump-start penalty, but that wouldn’t make much difference to the results, as Nicholas was already outside the top ten. Later, Krue Knight, Flynn Jacobs and Ethan Dellow were also hit with jump-start penalties.

As they broached the halfway point of the eight-lap contest, it was Tyler King up front while down in 12th place, 1.4 seconds from the leader, Toby James set the fastest lap of the race.

David Coward went off the track on the penultimate lap.

At the last lap board, it was Tyler King with his nose in front, leading Jordy Simpson, Rossi McAdam, Jake Senior, Seth Dellow, Tara Morrison, Phoenix O’Brien and Riley Nauta, but little separated the top ten as the final lap madness began.

Tyler King held on to take the chequered flag narrowly ahead of Riley Nauta while Jordy Simpson rounded out a podium that was covered by a tenth of a second.

Rossi McAdam just missed the rostrum while Jake Senior took fifth ahead of Phoenix O’Brien, Seth Dellow, Matthew Ritter, Tara Morrison, while Toby James rounded out a top ten that was covered by less than half a second.

Supersport 300 Race Three

After almost perfect conditions on Friday and Saturday, clouds gathered on the horizon as the machines warmed up in the pits. There had been some gentle spits of rain earlier in the morning, and the radar painted a gloomy outlook for the rest of the day. Rain was coming, it was just a matter of when…

Supersport 300 riders went out for their warm-up lap on schedule at 0910 as the track was declared wet.  The start was then delayed, and an announcement was made that the race had been reduced to four laps.

ASBK 2026 – Round One – Phillip Island – Supersport 300 Race Three – Image RbMotoLens

In reality, the track was not really wet, just damp, that horrible middle ground between the two, but it still looked likely to afford quite a lot of grip, until you hit a patch where it didn’t… Just what you want…  But it was certainly damp enough to warrant wets, particularly over such a short race distance, and with such limited resources, it was very much a scramble for many to get ready for the race start.

They finally fronted the starter at 0922.

Tara Morrison got off to a trademark great start ahead of Lincoln Knight and Jordy Simpson as that trio quickly started to form a breakaway group up front, even before the end of the opening lap.  Nixon Frost was an early faller.

We have never doubted the bravery of Tara, and that was on clear display again this morning as she set the pace up front and eked out a lead of more than two seconds across the opening two laps!

The track was now looking quite dry as the slight drizzle had eased, but the lap times were more than ten seconds off what this field runs on completely dry blacktop.

Tara Morrison continued to streak away from the field as Jake Senior moved up to second place, and the fight for the minor places on the rostrum started to really heat up.

Morrison led by almost four seconds at the last lap board and made no mistakes as she brought the bacon home. The margin at the chequered flag was 3.1 seconds in a race that she called the slowest but perhaps also most stressful she has ever had.

Lincoln Knight was the best of the rest in second place, earning his first podium in the category.

Jordy Simpson rounded out the podium by a nose over Phoenix O’Brien.
