Round Four – Morgan Park – Saturday
Kawasaki Supersport Race Two

Tom Edwards started the second Supersport / Next Gen race at Morgan Park with the narrowest of championship cushions after winning Sunday morning’s opener for BCperformance Kawasaki.

Race One had been full of early drama. Olly Simpson did not make the start after the DesmoSport Ducati struck trouble on the out-lap, Jake Farnsworth led early before retiring to the pits with an engine problem, and Tom Toparis crashed out of the lead at Turn 1 on lap three. That left Edwards and BCperformance Kawasaki team-mate Hayden Nelson to settle the win between themselves, with Edwards responding to Nelson’s final-lap attack to take maximum points.

Redemption missions for Simpson and Farnsworth

The Race One result had left Edwards on 168 points in the Next Gen standings, only two clear of Nelson after the pair finished first and second. Nelson also left the opener with the new Next Gen race lap record, a 1m15.300 set on lap three, underlining that there was very little between the two Kawasaki riders across both outright pace and race distance.

Toparis had shown winning speed before his crash, while Simpson’s non-start was a major blow to his Next Gen campaign. In the gap between races, DesmoSport Ducati believed they had traced the fault on Simpson’s Ducati V2 to a broken plug lead that had shorted out. The machine had been crashed heavily at The Bend and the issue only came to light when Simpson gridded up on Sunday morning. By Sunday afternoon, they were out for redemption.

Farnsworth had a similar task in the traditional Supersport ranks. He had qualified as the leading Supersport rider and briefly led Race One into Turn 1, but an engine failure brought that effort undone. For Race Two, the Worth Racing squad switched him to the second bike, giving him a chance to claw back points after Valentino Knezovic had stretched his Supersport lead to 21 points in the opener.

Simpson launches clear

That determination was clear when Simpson dropped the clutch and fired out of the hole, the DesmoSport Ducati rider immediately taking control of the race ahead of Edwards, Toparis and Nelson.

Edwards quickly put the bit between his teeth. The BCperformance Kawasaki rider reduced Simpson’s lead to 0.420s at the end of lap two, 0.312s one lap later, and just 0.128s by lap six. Toparis and Nelson were also still firmly in the picture at that stage, turning the fight for the podium into a four-rider contest.

Farnsworth was the best of the rest in fifth, heading Knezovic in what was already shaping as the key Supersport class battle.

Edwards applies the pressure

Simpson and Edwards gradually pulled away from the rest as the race settled. The pair ran a pace the others could not quite match, with Edwards setting the fastest lap of the race, a 1m15.507, on lap three.

Simpson’s strength was his consistency. After the opening lap, he circulated in the 1m15s for the entire race, his best a 1m15.615 on lap three and his final lap still a strong 1m15.755. Edwards was never far away, the gap only 0.117s at the end of lap ten and 0.112s at the end of lap 11, but Simpson continued to absorb the pressure.

Behind them, Nelson eventually got the better of Toparis for third. Toparis had looked strong in the early laps but faded from the lead fight in the second half, while Nelson’s race remained steadier even if he could not quite go with Simpson and Edwards.

Simpson keeps Edwards at bay

With two laps to run, Simpson and Edwards were almost three seconds clear of Nelson. Simpson had the rear Pirelli moving around plenty across the closing stages, but he kept the Ducati underneath him and Edwards behind him.

Simpson took the chequered flag after 17m46.017s, only 0.384s ahead of Edwards, completing a strong turnaround after the frustration of Race One. Nelson rounded out the podium 3.843s from the winner, with Toparis fourth, 7.014s back.

Farnsworth claws back Supersport points

Farnsworth held on to fifth outright and claimed maximum points in the traditional Supersport category, but Knezovic made him work all the way to the line. The championship leader crossed the stripe only 0.086s behind Farnsworth in sixth outright, second in class.

Sam Pezzetta completed the Supersport class podium in seventh outright, ahead of Josh Soderland and Jordy Simpson. Flynn Jacobs rounded out the top ten, while Eddie Leeson, Ghage Plowman and Lauchy Williams completed the 13 finishers.

Kawasaki title fight heads to Queensland Raceway

The result confirmed BCperformance Racing as the Supersport / Next Gen Teams Champion, capping a strong Morgan Park weekend for the Kawasaki squad.

In the Next Gen riders’ standings, Edwards left Morgan Park on 188 points, just four clear of Nelson on 184. Simpson’s Race Two win lifted him to 134, with Toparis fourth on 114, but the inaugural Next Gen title fight is now set to be settled between the two BCperformance Kawasaki riders at Queensland Raceway.

In Supersport, Knezovic remains in control on 184 points, but Farnsworth’s Race Two class win cut the margin to 16 points. With one round remaining, that title fight also goes to Queensland Raceway, with Knezovic still ahead but Farnsworth very much alive after salvaging his Morgan Park Sunday afternoon.
