Round Four – Morgan Park – Saturday
SW-Motech Superbike Race Two
Harrison Voight started the second and final SW-Motech Superbike race at Morgan Park with the championship momentum firmly in his corner after a controlled victory in Sunday morning’s opening 16-lap bout.
The McMartin Racing Ducati rider had turned pole position into a flag-to-flag win in Race One, setting the fastest lap along the way and stretching his championship lead over team-mate Josh Waters from 11 points to 17. Waters had limited the damage by following him home in second, but the defending champion needed a response in Race Two if he was to keep the title fight properly simmering ahead of next month’s Queensland Raceway finale.
The intra-team McMartin Racing contest remained the headline act. Voight had looked composed all weekend since finally rolling out on Saturday morning after sitting out Friday’s damp running, while Waters had been close enough to remain a constant threat without yet finding a way to put sustained pressure on his younger team-mate across race distance.
Mike Jones returned to the podium in Race One, giving Yamaha Racing Team its strongest Superbike result of the season so far, but the margin to Voight was almost 12 seconds at the flag. Jones and YRT were chasing more pace this second time around, particularly at a venue where he has so often been the benchmark.
Second-group scrap ready to resume
Behind the front quartet, the opening race produced a lively battle between Cameron Dunker, Glenn Allerton, Cru Halliday, John Lytras and Jonathan Nahlous. Dunker eventually won that fight for fifth after recovering from a mistake, while Allerton, Halliday, Lytras and Nahlous all spent time in the thick of the group.
Jack Favelle had a lonely run to fourth in Race One after an off during warm-up earlier in the day, but the Addicted to Track Yamaha rider had enough early pace to suggest he could again be a factor if he could stay with the podium group for longer in Race Two.
More points on offer
With Jacob Roulstone absent, Marcus Hamod out after being taken ill on Saturday, and Anthony West still sidelined through injury, the small Morgan Park field again left plenty of points available for those who made the flag.
Olly Simpson, standing in for West on the DesmoSport Ducati, was looking to finish the weekend strongly after a frustrating Sunday morning that began with a non-start in Supersport / Next Gen and ended with tenth in the opening Superbike race. He had at least gained some redemption shortly before the second Superbike bout, winning the second Supersport / Next Gen race for DesmoSport Ducati.
Ty Lynch had also been due for another chance to bank points before the championship headed to Queensland Raceway, but the South Australian did not start Race Two due to a mechanical problem.
Voight launches, Jones attacks
Voight again got the holeshot, but Jones was in no mood to let the McMartin Racing Ducati pair dictate the opening lap. The Yamaha Racing Team rider muscled through early to split Voight and Waters, while Lytras and Nahlous also launched well and were right in the mix as the field streamed through the opening sector.
Voight was twisting the throttle hard up front and working the rear Pirelli around the back of the circuit in warmer track conditions than the morning race, with the track up to 28.3 degrees for the afternoon bout.
Further back, Dunker began picking his way forward after initially dropping behind Nahlous and Halliday. The Blue Marlin Pools East Racing Yamaha rider cleared Halliday and Nahlous, then set about trying to reel in the leading quartet.
Jones keeps Voight honest
As the race started lap four, Lytras was right on the back of Waters while Jones was all over Voight. The top three were already into a serious rhythm, with Waters joining Voight and Jones in the 1m12s before the race reached quarter distance.
Voight lowered the fastest lap of the race to a 1m12.852 on lap four, but Jones was still hanging with him, responding with a 1m12.901 of his own. The pair then underlined their pace with a 1m12.982 from Voight and a 1m12.942 from Jones on lap five, followed by a 1m12.937 from Voight and a 1m12.966 from Jones on lap six.
That was the phase where Jones needed to make something happen. The Yamaha had the pace to pressure Voight in the early stages, but as the race approached half distance the Ducati rider began to prise open a few bike lengths.
Voight edges clear
Voight produced the definitive lap of the race on lap eight, a 1m12.803 that stood as the fastest lap of the afternoon. Jones remained second, but the gap had crept out to 0.616s at the end of that lap, then 0.663s a lap later, and 1.025s by lap ten.
Waters, meanwhile, had slipped away from the leading pair. The defending champion was more than a second behind Voight with 11 laps to run, then 2.241s adrift at the end of lap eight and 3.564s down after ten laps. He remained close enough to capitalise if anything happened ahead, but the race was increasingly becoming Voight versus the clock.
With four laps remaining, Voight’s advantage over Jones had grown to more than two seconds, with Waters a similar margin further back in third. The McMartin Racing rider then controlled the closing laps to complete a perfect Morgan Park Sunday.
Dunker holds off Favelle charge
The battle behind the podium became increasingly tense. Dunker moved past Lytras for fourth on lap nine and initially looked set to consolidate that position, but the closing laps brought both Favelle and Nahlous back into play.
Lytras tried to stay with Dunker, but the late-race pace from Favelle and Nahlous threatened to turn the fight for fourth into a four-rider scrap. Favelle was particularly strong in the closing stages, becoming one of the few riders still lapping in the 1m13s late in the race.
As they started the final lap, Favelle slipped past Lytras and set off after Dunker, but the Blue Marlin Yamaha rider had enough in hand. Dunker crossed the line fourth, 11.491s behind Voight, with Favelle fifth, only 0.708s further back. Lytras was sixth, another 0.237s behind Favelle, while Nahlous was just 0.125s behind Lytras in seventh.
Halliday and Allerton left searching
Cru Halliday and Glenn Allerton endured difficult second races. Halliday finished eighth, 25.518s from the lead, while Allerton was ninth, 29.168s behind Voight. Those results were hardly representative of either rider’s ability, and both camps will have some work to do before the Queensland Raceway finale.
Olly Simpson rounded out the top ten on the DesmoSport Ducati, ahead of Luca Durning and Joshua Newman.
Voight takes perfect Morgan Park score
Voight crossed the line 4.687s clear of Jones to complete the double, having taken pole position, both race wins, and the maximum 51-point haul from the Morgan Park weekend. Jones’ second place was another important step forward for Yamaha Racing Team, while Waters closed slightly on Jones in the final laps but ultimately ran out of time and had to settle for third.
The result sends Voight to the Queensland Raceway finale with a 24-point championship lead over Waters. The defending champion did not enjoy the Morgan Park weekend he needed, but Queensland Raceway is a venue that once troubled him before he got on top of it more recently, and he now holds the race lap record there. Only Waters can prevent Voight from lifting the championship late next month.
McMartin Racing also wrapped up the Superbike Teams Championship with one round remaining, moving to 368 points and out of reach of Yamaha Racing Team.
