Round One – Phillip Island – Qualifying
SW-Motech Superbike
The 30-minute qualifying session for Australian Superbike got underway just after 0800 this morning at Phillip Island, under somewhat cloudy skies but with an ambient temperature already over 20 degrees despite the early hour, on what looked like perfect track conditions.
Cam Dunker certainly got out of the right side of the bed; the youngster shot to the top early on with a 1m31.116, but underlining just how fast the track was this morning, he was quickly joined in the 31s by Harrison Voight, Jacob Roulstone, Jack Favelle and Glenn Allerton. And there were still almost 25 minutes to go!
Cru Halliday, Mike Jones and Anthony West were the last riders to exit pit lane.
Harrison Voight was the first under the 31 marker, the McMartin Racing youngster putting in a 1m30.898 on lap five to put the V4 R on provisional pole.
Glenn Allerton had water pump issues yesterday, which held him back, and it is a pretty massive undertaking to replace that part on a V4 R, which gave the Advocates squad plenty to do overnight. Thus, it was good for him to show his potential early on this morning, but he was back in the pits quickly for the machine to be checked over after that first run.
The YRT pairing of Mike Jones and Jonathan Nahlous moved up to P3 and P4 as the 30-minute session approached the halfway mark.
Friday pacesetter Anthony West had been out early on but presumably was not comfortable as he returned to the pits without setting a competitive time. Westy was back out for the latter half of the session, and the pressure was on the veteran to back up his Friday form and secure a front row start on his debut with DesmoSport Ducati.
Josh Waters had been flying somewhat under the radar and steadily building speed throughout Friday before banging in a 1m31.115 on his third lap of the session to relegate Cam Dunker to P3.
Anthony West then went P4 on 1m31.301, pushing Mike Jones back to P5.
With ten minutes to run, the entire top ten were running sub-32s, with many of those riders celebrating their PBs in the great conditions this morning. Voight was still leading the way with his early 1m30.898 and remained the only rider to go sub-31. Josh Waters was P2 ahead of Cam Dunker and Anthony West as Jacob Roulstone jumped to fifth with just over six minutes left in the session.
Little changed in the dying minutes of the session, and it seemed as though Josh Waters struggled to get a clean lap on his final flyer; thus, it was his young team-mate who took pole.
For reference purposes, Voight’s 1m30.898 was half-a-second outside of the 1m30.379 qualifying lap record set by Waters here in 2024.
Riders will exit the pit lane for their opening 11-lap contest of the weekend right at midday. Race two is slated for 0945 on Sunday morning, followed by race three at 1340.
