Round One – Phillip Island
SW-Motech Superbike Race Three

After almost perfect conditions on both Friday and Saturday, intermittent drizzle made things more complicated on Sunday. Despite the difficult conditions, the second race of the opening ASBK weekend for season 2026 was just as much of a cracker as Saturday’s race one.

The third and final race of round one got underway on schedule at 1340 on Sunday afternoon in somewhat sketchy conditions. Not wet, not dry, but somewhere in between, with more rain looming on the horizon. Just what you want hurtling towards turn one at over 300 km/h…

Harrison Voight and Josh Waters led Jacob Roulstone through turn one, but at turn two, Cam Dunker was incredibly brave and tried to run around the outside of Roulstone, but had to let the Honda man retain the position. Roulstone then got the better of Waters for second. Dunker around the outside of Waters at Lukey Heights, but couldn’t quite complete the move.

Voight managed to eke away a little across the latter lap of the opening lap while all sorts of crazy unfolded behind him.

Jacob Roulstone in second, Dunker third, Mike Jones scythed through to fourth, Westy then into fifth and Jonathan Nahlous shuffled Josh Waters further back to seventh, and he had Cru Halliday in close company. Was a bit going on!

Up front Voight was gone… A 1m30.885, suggesting that track conditions were actually pretty good.

Behind Voight, the melee continued as Dunker, Jones and West looked to get the better of Roulstone. A huge move from Westy under brakes at turn four saw the DesmoSport Ducati man shoot up to fourth.

Dunker moved into the lead of that group on lap three after Roulstone left the door open at MG Hairpin as the drizzle started to fall in that part of the circuit. Also slipping through that door was Jonathan Nahlous, who pushed Roulstone back to fifth.

Anthony West then slipped past Dunker to take second place and crossed the stripe to start lap five more than three-seconds behind race leader Harrison Voight, but only a couple of bike lengths ahead of Cam Dunker, Jonathan Nahlous, Jacob Roulstone and Josh Waters. Further back, Glenn Allerton had been forging his way up the field and was now up to seventh, ahead of Mike Jones and Cru Halliday.

Jonathan Nahlous got the better of Westy, but the veteran got him back at Hayshed. Nothing separated second through sixth at this stage of the race.  With five laps to go, Voight led by more than four seconds as Nahlous got the better of Westy again for second, Dunker fourth, Roulstone fifth and Waters sixth as they approached two-thirds race distance.

Westy back up to second, then Dunker up to third. Roulstone then ran in way too hot at turn four and lost a huge amount of ground. Nahlous fourth, Waters fifth, Jones sixth and Roulstone back to seventh.

Cam Dunker moved back up to second place with three laps to run, but Nahlous stole that second place back at Hayshed as the rain started falling at various points of the circuit. Sketchy!  Race leader Harrison Voight started putting his hand up from time to time, calling for the race to be called as it was now very wet around the back of the circuit. But the lack of adhesion flags came out instead of any red flags. Two laps to run.

Harrison Voight got the last lap board with a five-second lead over Jonathan Nahlous, as nearly all the leading riders were giving various signals that they thought it should be stopped. Front end slides, rear slides, feet dragging on tarmac, it started to look real ugly out there and now it was a game of survival and live to fight another day.

Cam Dunker went up the inside of Jacob Roulstone at Lukey Height on the final lap, but Roulstone got him back at MG to move back up to third to set up a drag race to the chequered flag, and it was Dunker who found the grip to win that contest for the final step on the podium.

Jonathan Nahlous had escaped that battle as conditions worsened to take an ultimately lonely second place more than five-seconds clear of Dunker and Roulstone.

On Saturday, I called the race one result as the youngest Australian Superbike podium ever, and now we have the youngest round podium with Jacob Roulstone making his presence felt in second and Cam Dunker looking more fired up than ever in third.

Some gremlins earlier in the weekend held teenager Jonathan Nahlous back somewhat in the first bouts, but his second place in the final encounter also signals his attention to shake up the established order.

There is a lot of racing to go before we can say this is definitely a changing of the guard, but these youngsters have certainly sent the first shot across the bows of the established statesmen of the class.

Ducati lost 1000 revs ahead of this round via parity enforcement from ASBK Management. In reality, that translates to 500 rpm, since the Ducati only pulls its maximum 16,500 rpm in top gear. While we still have a Ducati winner here today, a Honda rider came second for the round, and a Yamaha rider claimed third. Heading to SMP late next month, Yamaha leads the manufacturers’ championship while McMartin Racing Ducati lead the Teams race.
